The Problem
Growth is flat. Apple rarely promotes us. Our custom architecture is getting in the way of making a scalable universal app. We need to rebuild the app to support modern development tools like size classes and multitasking.
Goals
Build a best-in-class financial news app that incorporates customization and personalization to better serve our loyal customer delivering what they need, when they need it.

The Start

Below is a rough timeline of the process we went through while redesigning the CNBC iOS App. The process is cyclical, but more or less remains the same through out the project redesign lifecycle. Discover, Ideate, Prototype, Validate, then rinse and repeat.

01 Daily Journey

My product owners and I started this project by creating a rough journey map based on our users throughout a regular business day and mapped it to markets events. We used this deliverable to help guide our project kick-off.

02 Project Kick-off

We blocked off a day and invited a multidisciplinary group that included product, design, dev, and analytics. Ahead of the kick-off we prepared some problem statements that addressed concerns with the current experience and spent the day brainstorming ideas.

03 Design Principles

Through conversations with various peers and stakeholders, a few principles organically popped up to help guide our vision. It also acted as a gut-check. Something to point back and make sure we remained on the right track.

04 IA Exploration

As part of a product and design product vision walkthrough with the team, I created this deliverable to communicate the potential changes to the IA we were proposing that would help reduce the number of sections in our app and group like content in an intuitive way.

05 Wireframes

After aligning on a vision for the video section, I created this low-fidelity hero wire flow to share with various stakeholders to get buy-in and communicate our vision.

06 Concept Testing

The team wanted to make sure we validated our concepts early and often. Especially when it came to the riskiest stuff. Here is an example of two News section concepts we tested early in the process to validate our path forward.

07 Interactive Style Guide

After witnessing inconsistencies in interactive state styles for various components, I created a baseline guide for our developers to reference. You can view a video of an interactive Principle prototype here or a pdf of annotated handoff below.

08 Design Intuition

We knew from continuous feedback our user's really value the markets panel on our news section. I explored this concept of a collapsing mini-markets panel early on in the process and later fully brought it to life using ProtoPie to deliver interactive prototype.

10 Detailed Handoff

We determined during beta testing that there was a user need we weren't serving, the ability to quickly navigate to a section. We brainstormed some concepts and narrowed them down to two to test. This example of a annotated design handoff is the one we landed on.

The Outcome

We’ve continued to refine and support the iOS App and our NPS score is at an all-time high. We have surpassed our highest customer satisfaction score compared to any previous release. With our recent discovery efforts, we hope to create opportunities for continued growth by identifying user needs and exceeding their expectations.
